Upcoming 2027 single plunger brake code ( NYC only):
Based on the 2014 NYC adapted building code, retroactive requirements, elevators with single plunger brakes shall either be modified to provide a dual brake, an unintended movement protection system be installed (rope gripper) or the replacement of the main machine. If an elevator is between the age of eighteen (18) to twenty (20) years old, it would be our recommendation to modernize, replacing the controller and all associated components prior to 2027. Expect long lead times and upcoming demand for elevator modernizations that do not comply with the 2027 code. Below, please refer to the excerpt from the code:
ASME A17.3-2002, Appendix K, Chapter K3, Section 22.214.171.124 Single plunger brakes. (a) All existing traction elevators with single plunger brakes must comply with either of the following by January 1, 2027: (1) Alteration of single plunger assemblies to dual-plunger type, or (2) Compliance with Unintended Car movement Protection as specified by Section 2.19.1 of ASME A17.1.
